Locked out and dead.
I agreed to go to my daughter's this evening to walk her dog as a favor.
I get there and there are all these police cars lining the drive.
No biggie, I keep going.
I leave my purse in the car with a sweater over it because I'm just going upstairs, get Sadie, walk her long enough for her to relieve herself, get back in the car and go home.
I get out of the car with my daughter's apt key in my hand and lock the car door with the flip switch by hand and just as I'm closing the door, I'm cussing myself.
Yep, left my keys in my damn purse!
Well, I have a spare car key in my apt, way the hell across the community, but my apt keys are in my purse too!
Well, our community has a courtesy lock out service whereby the security guys will go to the office, get a spare apt key, and let you in your apt; so I call them.
They arrive but they are not allowed to drive me in their vehicle to my apt though.
Did I mention my apt was way the hell on the other side of the community? I'm talking at least a mile here. Not that I can't walk that far. I can run that far, but I have to walk there and back and it's already almost 7 pm, I'm in flip-flops and a flouncy skirt, and it's about 90 degrees out.
Well, they can't help the rules and I'm perpetually nice, so I say no biggie.
About this time a Dallas cop car drives by. I say, hey, can't they jimmy my car door open.
No, says the security fella, they're kinda busy with something else right now.
Really? What with?
Oh, someone died in that apt around the corner!
Oh my gosh! How awful.
Yeah, it was a 41 yo man. His son found him.
Oh God, that's horrible. Poor kid. How old is he?
In his 20's.
Okay, well time's wasting. You guys go get the key, I'll put the dog up, start walking over and meet you there.
I put Sadie up and start walking. I call a friend.
As I round the corner there are about 5 policemen, 3 security guards and a few residents.
One of the security guys I had just talked to, calls me over. I hang up the phone.
Their boss will make an exception and drive me over in his unmarked car, if I agree to get in the car with him.
Now, you might be thinking, No! That's kind of dangerous but I took a quick assessment of the situation.
There were at least 5 city cops watching me get in this car, several residents and two other security guards, AND I had my blackberry on me. So I figure if I disappear that fella's an idiot, and I politely told him what I was thinking, in front of the cops, before I got into the car.
So, on the way to my apt I found out from the security guy that the kid in that apt came home and couldn't get in.
He called security ( courtesy lock out service) They opened the door; the dude's dad was dead on the floor. He said they didn't know if it was his asthma or a heart attack.
It never occurred to me it might be suicide but one of my friends thought of it right away.
Either way, it was whacked for that kid. Ugh, breaks my heart.
The rest is comparably uneventful.
Security boss guy took me to my apt, the other guards brought me a spare apt key, I ran in, grabbed my spare car key, ran out, security boss guy took me back to my daughter's, got in my car, came home and collapsed on the sofa for an hour and a half.
