Just call me Barney Fife
On a lovely, sunny day in June, the 14th to be exact, I put a contract on a house...specifically to build one. Not to sound too darned ungrateful, it wasn't my dream house. My dream house is a big farmhouse with a wrap-around front porch on a some land with a tree-lined creek running along side the property far enough away that you can see it from the porch but not so close that it floods your driveway or the house.
This cute little dollhouse, I call it that because it ain't gonna be much bigger than one. There I go sounding all ungrateful again, but it is a small house...no garage and if I try hard, I won't see my neighbors undressing in their upstairs bathroom or bedrooms. Yeah, the property lines are that close.
But...and this is a big but and one that's highly desirable, at that, but, the builder is a good builder and they pay 2.5% of closing cost.
You see, I have zero cash. I haven't done so well financially in the selling real estate or divorcing or widowing business. Not that I thought of those things as businesses, but if I'd had half a mind to, I might have come out with more than nothing in my pocket.
So, the builder gives me 2.5% of the purchase price towards closing, the credit union gives me a 100% loan (no down payment required AND no PMI), plus they roll about 2% of the purchase price back into the loan AND, the realtor they hooked me up with gives me about $1,000 back after closing, just for using them. I got lucky. My realtor is very good.
So, I've been cruising along with this gig since June...nothing too stressful, just taking things in stride until now...two weeks before closing. Oh my God! People's work ethic sucks. I mean, they were in no big hurry before but we're so dang close I can taste it....so I'm pretty impatient. It took the electrician a week to get his butt out there and finish up a few minor things so it would pass inspection so the city would come out and install meters...which it has yet to do. It's Wednesday and we are scheduled for walk-throughs and inspections next Tuesday...6 days from now! WTH?
It's bad enough that I was freaking out about the loan going through but we got clearance today...which means, it will go through. But now, it's Wednesday, it's cold and rainy and the city still hasn't come out. Now, I'm freaking out that they won't finish by Friday and I'll have to reschedule the inspection and walk-through and the appraiser will have to come out twice which equals more money, and the closing could be delayed, which it's already 5 days later than I wanted because I wanted to be done before my son and his girlfriend arrive on the 18th for their holiday visit. It's bad enough that I am going to be super distracted while they are here but if things get delayed and jacked up, I'm going to be a frantic mess and what kind of vacation is that for them? or me? Waaaaa! I just wanna scream, but instead, I'm drinking cab and watching old reruns of "The Andy Griffith Show" and venting through the keyboard. Just call me Barney Fife, cuz that's how I feel, like Barney going off on a rant when he's frustrated.
